BoL Bestiary: The Bats of Tlactoztlan

Many different varieties of bats, collectively referred to as tzinacatli in Tlacuatl, are found throughout Tlactoztlan, ranging from the normal-sized to the truly gigantic. Below are stats for three different varieties, each of which can pose a significant threat to the unwary traveler.

Tzinacatliachitzin (Bat Swarm)

A swarm of twenty or more normal-sized bats, of the sort that might fly out of a cave and briefly trouble an unlucky adventurer. If three or more points of damage are inflicted on the swarm it will disperse and flee, but only 3-12 bats will actually have been killed.

Tzinacateztli (Giant Vampire Bat)

A large, carnivorous bat found in the deep jungle and occasionally in the mountains. These creatures often travel in small groups of 4-6, in search of food. The bite of this variety of bat is mildly poisonous, and anyone bitten by a giant vampire bat will suffer a -2 penalty to attack roles and move at half speed unless they succeed at a Tricky Strength-based task check. After two rounds the victim of a Giant Vampire Bat’s bite must make a second Tricky Strength-based task check or fall unconscious for d6 minutes. Giant Vampire Bats will drain d3 Lifeblood per minute from an unconscious victim if not driven away.

Barbarians Of Lemuria GM Screen (Legendary Edition Version)

So with a little friendly nudging & some great suggestions from an appreciative reader (ReaperWolf at the BoL Forums) I finally updated my Barbarians of Lemuria GM Screen to reflect the small number of rules changes & additions in the Legendary Edition of that august game. Most notably I’ve tweaked the Task Modifiers to match those listed in the LE. I also added in the “Shake off wounds” option to the summary of spending Hero Points. Oh, and I updated the armor section to match the LE approach to armor.

All of this necessitated some layout changes that I’m not entirely enamored of, but it’ll still get the job done.

Oh, and my house rules for kicking and having large shields as an option are still on here, too. Feel free to ignore those if you don’t want ’em in your game.

If you happen to spot anything that needs updating or fixing, please let me know in the comments for this post.

BoL Bestiary: The Crocodiles of Tlactoztlan

Crocodiles, as well as the fortunately very rare Giant Crocodile, are found throughout Tlactoztlan, in the swamps as well as along the banks of the many rivers and streams that crisscross the lost valley. Both varieties are quite aggressive and can be incredibly dangerous to anyone unlucky enough to encounter them unprepared. In addition to biting with their massive jaws, crocodiles are able to lash out with their powerful tails, knocking foes from their feet. Any character or creature stuck by a crocodile’s tail must succeed at a task check against strength (Hard for normal crocodiles, Demanding for giant crocodiles) or be knocked prone.

1977 Detectives: Hu Fong Lee, His Daughter, And Her Henchmen

Wherein your humble scribe succumbs to the siren song of Mini Six once again. The fabulous Precinct ’77 mini-setting continues to serve as the inspiration.

Hu Chang Min parted the beaded curtain, allowing a flare of sunlight into the dim, smoke-filled room behind the Canal Street storefront. Pausing briefly to place a small round coin in the palm of the golden Buddha that stood beside the doorway, she crossed the room silently. Alerted to her presence by the sound of the tribute, her father lifted his wizened head and watched as she approached, regarding with some amusement the haughtiness in her bearing even as she strove to show the traditional deference required by their culture.

“Father,” the elegantly dressed young woman began, bowing slightly at the waist, her exquisite black hair flowing like ink down her back as she did. “Lt. Washington is, as the gweilo say, a tough customer. I do not presume to know your mind, but I feel as though I must suggest that the detective now knows too much.”

“Daughter,” replied Hu Fong Lee, his eyes bright with appreciation for his daughter’s boldness. He knew it would not be long before the girl began to exert herself even more. She had been growing more assertive ever since her brother had left the City to expand the family’s influence in California. “I have allowed the black jing cha to learn precisely as much as I desire, and no more. However, to ensure that my generosity is not exceeded, I request that you take Lo, Din and Tsu and eliminate Lt. Washington tonight. I believe he will be found at the drinking establishment known as McSorley’s. Try not to involve anyone else, if possible, please. We do not want to attract undue attention.”

“Of course, father,” Min replied, her face scarcely able to conceal the pride she felt at being entrusted with this task. Soon Hu Fong Lee would be too old to run the operation, and with Wang-fen occupied with the situation she had arranged for him in San Francisco, surely she would be named her father’s successor. “I will gladly remove this threat to our, I mean, your organization.”

“Go then, my Jade Blossom, and bring honor to our family,” the old man replied. If she could perform this task, faced with the unexpected variables Hu Fong Lee knew that she would encounter, he would feel that she was prepared to assume even more responsibilities. And if she failed? The wily old man chuckled to himself quietly as his daughter left his sanctuary, pausing again before the golden Buddha at the door. If she failed, so be it. He was not so ready to retire to the opium den that he could not maintain the business until his number one son returned from his journey to the West.

BoL Foes: Izatacli – The Sorcerers Of Tlactoztlan

Wherein your humble scribe presents a set of opponents for his Mesoamerican themed setting for Barbarians of Lemuria.

The sorcerers of Tlactoztlan, when spoken of at all, are know by the appellation Izatacli, the white-headed ones. Like the white-crowned parrots whose feathers comprise their distinctive headdresses, Izatacli are aloof and distant from the world. As magicians, Izatacli are possessed of eldritch wisdom and the means to exert their wills over reality, a fact that makes them terrifying to the average Tlactozotl, and potentially terrible foes for those who are not consumed with fear. Izatacli seldom interact with Texotli or Coztli, preferring either the company of their own kind or else the solitude that allows them to pursue their magical studies more effectively.

Below are stats for Izatacli Rabble and Izatacli NPCs. Individual Izatacli Villains, like Nezatl Xomec, are unique and should be created as needed by the Game Master.

BoL Foes: Texotli – The Priests Of Tlactoztlan

Wherein your humble scribe presents a set of opponents for his Mesoamerican themed setting for Barbarians of Lemuria.

The priests of Tlactoztlan are called Texotli, the blue-headed ones. Like the blue-crowned parrots whose feathers comprise their distinctive headdresses, Texotli are uniquely in tune with the world around them and are prone to trance-like states of reverie and contemplation. Texotli serve the spiritual needs of the Tlactozotl, leading religious services, conducting human sacrifices, and interceding with the gods to bring rains and strong harvests. Texotli are frequently protected by the Coztli, whether traveling between cities or safely ensconced within their great temples in Xotepeclan and Tecali. The Texotli have at times pursued aggressive “witch hunts” against the sorcerous Izatacli, but for the moment, both sides are observing an unofficial détente.

Below are stats for Texotli Rabble and Texotli NPCs. Individual Texotli Villains, like Tlilpotonqui, are unique and should be created as needed by the Game Master.

BoL Foes: Coztli – The Warriors Of Tlactoztlan

Wherein your humble scribe presents a set of opponents for his Mesoamerican themed setting for Barbarians of Lemuria.

The warrior caste of Tlactoztlan are known as Coztli, the yellow-headed ones. Like the yellow-crowned parrots whose feathers comprise their distinctive headdresses, the Coztli are deadly combatants and fearless defenders of their homeland. These men and women are a varied lot – coming in all shapes and sizes – for it is only their martial prowess that makes them worthy of the name Coztli and the rights and privileges that come with it. Respected throughout Tlactoztlan – and feared beyond the lost valley – Coztli serve not only as soldiers but also as guards and escorts for the Tlactozotl priests, the Texotli.

Below are stats for Coztli Rabble and Coztli NPCs. Individual Coztli Villains, like Chalchiquahchimal, are unique and should be created as needed by the Game Master.

The Rocktagon (Draft)

PART 4: THE BOOKS OF ROCK
Ok, this is the central thematic thrust of the book and, considering the vast breadth of the subject material, is the one most folks will have questions about. After all, if you like Psychobilly music, you might want to know where it fits in to the Rocktagon, why it isn’t represented as a major school and why The Reverand Horton Heat isn’t a major saint. Let me clarify a few things for the music lovers out there:

1. The Rocktagon is designed to create interesting gaming mechanics out of easily identifiable styles. It isn’t a properly academic discussion of rock and its family tree, but a way to get players interacting with the universe and provide them with eight very clear and interesting alternatives for characters (and many more besides that if you count the ‘posers’ and the fact that you can mix licks to create an incredibly diverse set of styles).

2. While you and I might know the subtle differences between Thrash, Death and other types of metal, to the outside world, they all represent speed, emotion and raw destructive power over melody and precision. This creates a good general idea of what the character sounds like, encompasses a number of styles in a tight grouping that keeps the options simple for the layman (the Rocktagon would become a Rocktadodecahedron just for the various styles encompassed in Death alone), and also provides a clear opposition school, in this case Yngwie, which is all about classical precision and complex melodies.

3. The names are all pretty much temporary at this point. I’m pretty set on Sabbathites and Nazarites, but the others are all in flux. The idea is to name them something that really encompasses the general feel of that type of music, but has a more metal name that sounds somewhat like a mystical derivative of the band that best represents that school.

Well, with those explanations out of the way, here is a brief description of the various Books of Rock that make up our Rocktagon and the schools of Martial Music training that are set up around them…

Sabbathite: The original Heavy Metal style symbolized by Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Dio. Heavily identified with occultism, Sabbathites try to cultivate a demonic image in their music and style.

Patron Saint: The Great OZ AKA The Prince of Darkness

Imagery: Ozzy with his arms folded over holding a headless bat in one hand and a headless dove in the other.

Opposition School: The Nazarites. The Judeo-Christian belief system stands opposed to everything truly dark and metal, in the Sabbathite’s eyes.

Great House: House Dio

Hayre: Metal popularized in the late 70′s, early eighties including Motley Crue, Poison and, most importantly, KISS. Very upbeat celebratory anthems with a bacchanal theme.

Patron Saint: The 4-Fold One AKA The God of Thunder

Imagery: A KISS amalgam wearing a combination of the 4 original members costumes and a head with the 4 faces of the original members. Arms are crossed, with an Hookah in one hand and a bottle in the other.

Opposition School: The Nihilists. The followers of Hayre have an intense dislike of killjoys and party-crashers.

Great House: House Simmons

Led: Blues based heavy rock popularized by Led Zepplin, AC/DC and Deep Purple. Lyrically Deep and musically diverse.

Patron Saint: Zoso AKA The Hermetic Twins

Imagery: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant as conjoined twins. Page has an Axe and Bow, Plant is giving a banshee wail of great power and holds a Book with 4 mystical symbols on it.

Opposition School: The Punks. The followers of Zoso find the brash, anarchistic Punks antithetical to harmony in the metalsphere, a disharmonious rejection of the hermetical order of the universe.

Great House: House Bron-Y Aur

Yngwie: Named for Ygnwie Malmsteen, the patron saint of Virtuoso Metal and including the likes of Randy Rhodes and other Guitar Gods.

Patron Saint: Yngwie AKA The Axe Master

Imagery: Yngwie Malmsteen holding an Axe.

Opposition School: The Deadites. The Yngwies are the ultimate musicians (as far as they’re concerned) and the unlovely noise and imprecision of Death disturbs them to no end.

Great House: House Rhodes

Nazarite: Christian Rock like Petra, White Lion and Stryper. Has a mix from all the other styles (except Sabbathite) but the underlying theme is worship of the Judeo-Christian God.

Patron Saint: Gabriel AKA The Messenger

Imagery: An Arch-angel wreathed in fire and holding a Trumpet.

Opposition School: The Sabbathites are evil incarnate in the Nazarite’s eyes, witches, sorcerers and satanic cohorts who stand between them and the salvation of the metalsphere.

Great House: House Luther

Nihilist (Formerly Alt): Alternative Rock from Nirvana to Goth rock. Basically nihilistic and obsessed with ‘new’ sounds.

Patron Saint: The Suicide King AKA The Gloom

Imagery: Kurt Cobain, arms crossed, with a shotgun in one hand and a joint in the other OR Robert Smith of the Cure, crying blood, with arms crossed holding a pistol in one hand and an Ankh in the other. Haven’t decided which, yet.

Opposition School: Hayre. To the typical Nihilist, the simple, catchy, live fast and party hard rhythms of Hayre smack of commercialism, the ultimate evil to the Nihilist who sees life for what it truly is.

Great House: House Nirvana

Punk: Anarchistic and unlovely, Punk is the music of the ‘true’ rebels (at least as far as they’re concerned).

Patron Saint: The Rotten One AKA The Anarchist

Imagery: Johnny Rotten looking suitably crazed with a nimbus of light around his head giving a banshee wail.

Opposition School: Led. The followers of Zoso are dinosaur rockers, old farts who try to impose order and beauty on an a decidedly random and uncaring universe. This galls the Punks whose main goal is to give the universe the finger and try to take it down with them.

Great House: There is no House representing Punk as that would require an organization and leadership than is totally antithetical in Punk ethos. There is a section of the galaxy known as Punk Space, but it is actually nothing more than a whole swath of Star Systems with ever shifting borders totally dominated by anarchy and dedicated to the punk ideal. Occasionally, the pent up energy of this area will spill out into the rest of the universe as Punk Crusades, massive raids to pillage, vandalize and occasionally (when luck is on their side) conquer neighboring star systems.

Deadite: Death, Thrash and other types of Speed Metal. Long on noise, speed, emotion and raw destructive power over melody and precision.

Patron Saint: The Cowboy from Hell AKA The Sound & The Fury

Imagery: Dimebag Darrell with a Cowboy hat on, grinning maniacally with one hand holding an axe and another stroking a Panther.

Opposition School: Yngwie. Prancing, wussies with their finger exercises and their scales piss off the Deadites to no end, as they revel in the pure sound and fury of musical weaponry over artsy-fartsy technique.

Great House: House Pantera

Each house will have its own Heroic Backgrounds for each musical position a band might have, so you’ll be able to be a ‘Sabbithite Axe’ or a ‘Punk Beater.’

In addition, there will be a set of musical ‘Licks’ that represent some of the musical styles of that School, like the Sabbithite’s ‘Devil’s Triad’ or the ‘Arpeggio’ of the Yngwie school. These will be used in the musical dueling rules.

Finally, there will be a ninth school which will be for the lesser musical schools like Hip Hop, Funk, Country, etc. It will contain a set of generic backgrounds and Licks that you can mix and match to create these custom musical schools, but those of the ninth school will have flaws that make it harder for them to get along in headbanger society.

Mini Six Characters: 1977 Detectives

Wherein your humble scribe succumbs to the siren song of Mini Six once again. The fabulous Precinct ’77 mini-setting continues as the inspiration.

Lt. Dankowicz hit the lights and siren on his unmarked cruiser. He checked the mirror, smiled at the sight of his magnificent ‘stache, and pulled out into the traffic on Canal to pursue the purple ’73 Lincoln he’d been on the lookout for. Funk Washington would be behind the wheel, on his way back to Harlem after having picked up a shipment from Hu Fong Lee. And it was time he and Washington had a little chat.

Funk saw the lights come on in his rearview, fidgeted nervously with the Playboy keychain dangling from the ignition, and punched the gas. He swerved the big car out into oncoming traffic to pass a couple of delivery trucks and nearly ran head-on into a tour bus. Cursing, he took a hard, squealing right down an alley hoping to lose the fuzz. Instead, he found himself at a dead end as the unmarked cruiser pulled in behind him.

Lt. Dankowicz approached the Lincoln cautiously, but didn’t draw his service revolver. He didn’t want to send the wrong message to the man inside. As he got to the car the heavily tinted window rolled down and Funk Washington looked at the detective with cold, bloodshot eyes.

“Shit, Ox,” he whispered harshly. “What the fuck you doing? Lee’s as good as grass and you pull me over? What the fuck, man? I been workin’ this sting for three months now. What. The. Fuck?”

“Sorry, Melvin,” the big man replied wistfully, leaning down to make it look like he was questioning the driver. “It’s just, you know, Gina’s been getting all weird on me lately. She completely flipped out that I boxed with Torres. She’s threatening to move out again and I really need to chew the fat with my old partner, just to clear my head and get some, I dunno, perspective?”

Lt. Washington gritted his teeth, but felt his heart soften just a bit. “Write me a damned ticket, and let me get outta here before you blow everything, foo. You call me up at my pad tonight and we can meet at McSorley’s. But damn, Ox. Don’t mess this shit up over Gina. You know that bitch be crazy. And that’s the only perspective you need, brotha.”
