The Basalt Bird Of Beq’Azir

Wherein your humble scribe presents three characters and a monster for Tunnels & Trolls. All of these are best enjoyed with some dates and hummus.

“And why are we climbing this damnable cliff again, wizard?” the brusque Bakir asked of his companion.

“We seek the Basalt Bird of Beq’Azir, of course!” the magician exclaimed, his voice unfazed by the effort expended in hauling his bulk up the mountainside. “It’s eyrie is known to lie atop Mount Rafeeda. The Scrolls of Sha’Qahir plainly state…”

Bassam’s discourse was – thankfully – interrupted by a screech that sounded more like stone on stone than it did the cry of a living thing.

“Na’asaad!” hissed their fellow climber, as she drew her short sabre from the jeweled scabbard at her delicate waist. “It would seem that the beast he seeks has found us instead.”

A rough black shadow streaked across the sky and turned to attack the party of miscreants who had dared to encroach upon its territory. The sun gleamed off the razor-edged talons as the creature gained speed.

“Quit crowding me, you stupid oaf! I can’t invoke the powers with that damnable dagger of yours dampening my magical mastery!” Bassam barked at Bakir, whose Kris was indeed interfering with the invoker’s incantations.

“Damn your twisting of God’s laws, wizard! I need room to fire this arrow!” the warrior retorted as he drew an arrow and took aim.

“Stop it, both of you!” commanded Bari’ah. “We have to work together if we’re going to survive this,” she continued in that ever-so-persuasive voice of hers. “Quickly now, Bassam, trade places with me – that should give you the distance you need. And it is plain to see that I will take up far less space than you, giving Bakir the freedom to use his bow. Insa’Allah, it will fell the bird before it reaches us!”

The Basalt Bird of Beq’Azir

Monster Rating: 78
Combat Dice: 8d6+39
Special Damage:
3/Vorpal Blade – The razor-sharp talons of the Basalt Bird slash its foes most effectively
5/Oh Go Away! – The bizarre cry of the Basalt Bird panics its foes
Special Abilities: Fly Me – Despite its rocky nature, the Basalt Bird can, indeed, fly. Also, its stony hide acts as 8 point armor.

The Basalt Bird of Beq’Azir is a legendary creature spoken of in many myths and stories throughout the region of the Silver Desert. It is rumored that whosoever can capture the bird will be granted three wishes by the Lord of the Air as he bargains for the release of his beloved pet. Of course, wresting wishes from a demon is certain to ensure a degree of enmity that most mere mortals would rather avoid.

BoL Character: Uncle Fakhir

Wherein your humble scribe presents a Barbarians of Lemuria system-powered character built for use in an Arabian Nights style game. The alert among you will remember that I’m actually running an Arabian Nights game using BRP (not BoL). No worries, though. Even though my players want the relative extra crunch of BRP, I’m still thinking in BoL terms where I can.

Depending upon whom you ask, Uncle Fakhir is either the benevolent master of The Academy For Wayward Children or he is a filthy criminal who exploits and controls the orphans of Wah’Jabiah, forcing them to pick pockets for his own profit. Actually, he is both of these things, and quite a bit more.

While it is entirely true that Uncle Fakhir fills his coffers with the ill-gotten gains acquired by his army of diminutive cutpurses, he does indeed provide them with a safe home, good food, and even an education. He seldom raises a hand against his charges and is always there to secure their safety from the town guard in the event that one of them should be caught in the act of “teaching the blessed lesson of humility” to someone in the souk. Uncle Fakhir truly cares for his “nieces and nephews” and will exact brutal revenge on anyone who should happen to harm them.

Numerous merchants, guardsmen, officials, and soldiers (as well as a number of lovely young ladies within the Sultan’s harem) are graduates of Uncle Fakhir’s Academy and most look kindly upon the man. This may explain just how it is that he is able to continue to operate the Academy as something of an open secret within the walls of Wah’Jabiah.

Raised by his older brothers on the streets of Wah’Jabiah, Fakhir first made his way in the world as a street performer and rogue. Though he now engages mostly in legitimate commerce (at least on the surface) and has grown rather fat with his age and success, Fakhir remains a nimble and dangerous foe in combat.

BoL Character: Captain Jibril ibn Sharad

Wherein your humble scribe presents a Barbarians of Lemuria system-powered character built for use in an Arabian Nights style game. The alert among you will remember that I’m actually running an Arabian Nights game using BRP (not BoL). No worries, though. Even though my players want the relative extra crunch of BRP, I’m still thinking in BoL terms where I can.

Jibril, son of Sharad, was born at sea, and that is where he has made his home ever since. Jibril is currently the captain of the Whispering Wind, a fast merchant vessel that plies the seas of El-Aqarat serving whoever is willing to provide enough dinars. Though he has none of his own, Jibril has a soft spot for children and will often go out of his way to spoil the wharf rats in port cities, treating them to a bag of dates or apricots.

The Arabian Adventure Continues

Well now. The Basic RolePlaying/Arabian Nights game I’ve been running has proven to be so popular that we’ve got another session scheduled for Saturday and we’re adding in a fourth player. I reckon I’ll take that as high praise (based on my group’s tendencies) and be happy. Unfortunately it means I’m spending the time I could be working on finishing out the last two Standard Order demons focusing on getting myself ready for another magic carpet ride. There are certainly worse things.

Anyway, expect some demony goodness soon. Just maybe not until the weekend. Meanwhile, I’ll point you to the ultimate in Arabian Nights gaming soundtracks: The magic of Mohammed El-Bakkar! (warning: topless belly dancer pics comprise most of the album covers)

El-Aqarat Adventure!

Last night we got in another session of the Arabian Nights style Basic RolePlaying adventure I’ve been running. Everyone had a blast and though there were no flying carpet antics this time, there was some great role-playing as the heroes found themselves in the City of Brass and then some interesting combat against a group of Ghûls that had decided to attack the very bandits that the players we seeking to fight against. Ah, three way combats. They’re fun, but complicated.

In any case, now that this particular adventure is complete, here’s the notes I put together to run it. They’re laid out in PocketMod format (though I put the template together myself in InDesign). So they’re a bit like a One Page Dungeon, but different. Enjoy or ignore, it’s your call.
